Soccer Post-Season Slams Shut

All four Alameda high school soccer teams that qualified for a North Coast Section (NCS) tournament were defeated in the first round of the playoffs.

Women’s soccer
The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s soccer team entered the NCS Div. II tournament as the No. 10 seed. They lost to Casa Grande High of Petaluma, 4-1, in the first round on Feb. 19 on the road. The Hornets could not stop the Gauchos’ versatile attack. Four different Gauchos scored a goal in the contest. AHS’ season ended with a 14-7 overall record.

The Encinal High School (EHS) women’s soccer team was outclassed by Alhambra High of Martinez to the tune of a 4-0 defeat on Feb. 19. The Jets qualified for the NCS Div. III tournament despite a 4-11 overall record at the time. The No. 13-seed Jets could not keep up with the effective attack from the Bulldogs. The Jets finished the season with a 4-12 overall record.

The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s soccer team was bounced from the NCS Div. IV tournament by Lick-Wilmerding High of San Francisco after a 3-1 loss on Feb. 19. The Pilots trailed 2-0 at intermission. SJND ends its season with an 8-7-1 overall record.

Men’s soccer
The AHS men’s soccer team entered its opening round match of the NCS Div. II tournament against Las Lomas High of Walnut Creek as the heavy underdog. The Hornets were the No. 16 seed in the 16-team playoff. This meant they had to take on the No. 1-seed Knights in the first round. The match went as planned — the Knights defeated the Hornets, 2-0, on Feb. 19 at the Knights’ home field. The Hornets’ record dropped to 9-8-5 overall on the season.

With all four teams eliminated the high school soccer season is over in Alameda. The EHS men’s team did not qualify for a postseason tournament. The SJND men’s team played its soccer season in the fall.
