SJND Track Athletes Heading to Section Tournament

Five St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) track and field athletes qualified for the North Coast Section (NCS) Meet of Champions this weekend, May 27 and 28.

The five Pilots advanced to the NCS meet by performing well at the NCS Bay Shore Area track meet last Saturday, May 21, at Castro Valley High.

The top seven competitors from each event advance to the Meet of Champions on the UC Berkeley campus. From there, the top three in each event at the Meet of Champions move on to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state meet on June 3 and 4 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Junior Willie Mein was the first to qualify in the men’s 800-meter race by winning his heat in 2:00.45 and taking the seventh spot — each event has multiple heats. Pilot senior Daniel Ratto finished a little better than Mein in the men’s 800-meter race with a time of 1:59.29.

The next two qualifiers were freshman Emily Perez and junior Kiera Marshall in the women’s 3200-meter race. Both girls ran together for 7.5 laps, but Emily edged Kiera by less than half a second finishing first and second, respectively, with times of 11:19.

SJND’s final athlete to advance is one of the best long-distance runners in the state junior Cooper Teare. Teare qualified to run in the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter races, but decided to focus solely on the 3200-meter race. Teare won the 3200-meter race with a time of 9:19.25.

Teare is the reigning CIF Div. V individual cross-country champion.
