SJND Softball on Fire this Season

The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s softball team is tearing the through the North Coast Section Division V softball playoffs.

The Pilots entered the tournament as a five seed out of 13 teams. The Pilots defeated Urban of San Francisco 13-3 in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday, May 20. 

The Lady Pilots went 18 of 26 at the plate with freshman Gina Bonardi, sophomore Anekalia Crevani, freshman Lea Akima and infielder Eileen Rhatigan each totaling three hits. Rhatigan led the way with four RBIs. 

The Pilots scored three in the first inning, four in the second and blew the game away with six runs in the fourth inning. Crevani pitched four-and-two-thirds innings giving up three earned runs, but striking out five. Crevani also hit a home run. The contest was called off after the fifth inning, discarding the sixth and seventh innings because the Pilots were up 10 runs.

The Pilots followed that victory up with an 11-2 thumping of Valley Christian of Dublin on Friday, May 23 in the second round of the tournament. SJND hitting percentage dropped compared to its opening-round contest, hitting just 13 of 32 from the plate, but they made up for it in other areas. 

The Pilots had 19 stolen bases in the contest. Akima led the way with four stolen bases, while four other players stole three bases. Bonardi went three-of-five from the plate, the most hits from any Pilot batter in the contest. Crevani pitched six solid innings, giving up just one earned run. She walked two batters and struck out nine. 

The victory advances the Pilots to the NCS Division V semifinal where they took on Redwood Christian of San Lorenzo. The game was played yesterday after press time. 

With its quarterfinal win, the Pilots improved its record to 17- on the season. Earlier in the year the Pilots swept through the Tri County Athletic League season by going 10-0 in the league. 

If the Pilots beat Redwood Christian they will advance to the NCS Division V finals, which will take place this Friday, May 30, against the winner of the other semifinal between Ferndale and St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma.
