Sisters Triumph in Tennis

Chris Pondok Sisters Aysha and Azaria Hayes won the NCS doubles title last Wednesday.

St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s tennis sister duo Aysha and Azaria Hayes won the North Coast Section (NCS) Div. II women’s doubles championship in a three-set match last Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The siblings defeated Sophia Landes and Hanna Marcus of Piedmont in the final at the Harbor Bay Club. After dominating the first set 6-1, Aysha, a senior, and Azaria, a sophomore, dropped the second set 3-6. However, the SJND duo rebounded in the third set with a resounding 6-0 set to win the title.

The second set was the first set they dropped in the tournament. The Hayes sisters defeated Frances Jacobsen and Jeanne Peabody of Lick-Wilmerding in San Francisco 6-2, 6-1 in the first round on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Later that day, the siblings beat Jennifer Jolin and Meigan Butler from McKinleyville 6-2, 6-0.

Aysha and Azaria were dominant all season. Aysha went a perfect 12-0 in the regular season, while Azaria was 11-0. Neither of them dropped a set. The duo then went on to win the Bay Counties League tournament before taking part in the NCS tournament.

The sisters were dominant last year as well. Last year, Azaria, just a freshman, won the NCS singles title with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lauren McCormack of Head Royce of Oakland. Aysha also won the doubles’ section title, but with teammate Nicole Bermudez. Aysha and Bermudez beat Caroline Ferguson and Elise Paloglou of University in San Francisco in the 2015 doubles’ final 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).

This year, Bermudez, a senior, competed in the NCS singles tournament, but lost in the first round to Angela Huang of Piedmont.
