While Alameda’s local schools are friendly rivals for sure, the class presidents representing the student leadership of Alameda, Encinal and St. Joseph high schools have teamed up to hold an affordable prom dress sale. The trio: Emily Rentschler of Encinal, Marisa Woo of Alameda High and Marissa Murphy of St. Joe’s invite students to find affordable dresses and possibly win a free prom ticket just for showing up.
The sale will be held this Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alameda High New Gym at 2200 Central Ave.
The Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) was disappointed to see that in the article about the Encinal High School (EHS) gas leak ("School District under Fire," Feb. 20) the Alameda Sun failed to include sentences in the district’s statement that explained that a) teachers can talk to reporters, but b) we prefer they talk to district staff first.
The AUSD statement emailed to the Sun, said in full:
As Emmett Kaake wandered the halls of Alameda High School with his good friend Fischer Davis one day, they joked around about creating a recycling club. What started as a joke turned into a real passion.
"What would we recycle?" Davis asked. "Not just plastic bottles, maybe something more interesting, like bikes."
The pair decided to start collecting used bicycles from generous donors in the Alameda community, fix them up and give them to low income kids in the 510 area code.
The Alameda Sun received reports last week from parents and teachers about a pair of incidents that involved the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD). The first involved a memorandum sent to teachers on the heels of the Feb. 11 gas leak at Encinal High School (EHS). The second concerned the behavior of a substitute teacher at Lincoln Middle School two days later.
Three Encinal High student-athletes and one from Alameda Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) committed to their future college destinations last week on the Encinal High campus.
Current seniors Melissa Ma — she attends ASTI, but is a member of the Encinal women’s soccer team — Alexandra (‘Alex’) and Cecilia (‘CeCe’) Sifuentes and Dylan Tongilson all committed to college programs within the last two weeks.
