As principals change, opinion on city’s newest school 

Jan Goodman recently retired after eight years as principal of Ruby Bridges Elementary School. Her retirement came with some well-deserved praise; this at the same time we are evaluating the eye-opening decision by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu. In the Vergara v. California case, Treu said current teacher tenure policies in California are unconstitutional.

Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Superintendent Kirsten Vital will be leaving Alameda to take the reins of the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD). Vital’s new employer announced that its school board settled on Vital on Saturday, June 14. The Capistrano Dispatch reports that the CUSD undertook a national search but replaced those search firms last month to focus on California candidates.

It is unbelievable to me how quickly this year has passed — and what an amazingly full year we have had. Once again, our district, our schools, our teachers and our students have accomplished so much. I am delighted with our district’s very steady progress and our community’s very steadfast support of our schools. Before our summer begins, please take a moment to reflect on all that we, as a unified school district, have achieved at both the district and school-site level.
