School Supply Drive Currently Underway
Time to support students in annual ‘Equipped 4 Success’
The Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) announced the launch of its annual “Equipped 4 Success” school supply drive. The drive supports Alameda low-income students by providing them with new backpacks and quality school supplies.
“Imagine having to choose between paying your bills or purchasing school supplies for your child,” said AEF Executive Director Vicki Sedlack. “Unfortunately, that is the reality for many struggling Alameda families.”
Community members may make cash donations to AEF via its website at alamedaeducation.org or by mailing checks to P.O. Box 1363, Alameda, CA 94501.
“Cash donations enable us to take advantage of bulk orders and price breaks to get the most bang for the buck,” said Sedlack. “In fact, while the average family spends more than $100 per year per child on school supplies, we are able to support an elementary student for $30 and a middle- or high-school student for $40.”
Since 2012, AEF has supported almost 5,000 Alameda low-income students with quality, age-appropriate backpacks and school supplies. This year, 820 students have been identified as needing help.
AEF works with community partners to identify and distribute to students who are most in need, including the McKinney-Vento homeless program of the Alameda Unified School District, the Alameda Boys and Girls Club, the Alameda Point Collaborative, Alameda Head Start, Girls Inc. of the Island City, Operation Dignity, School-based health clinics and the Woodstock Child Development Center.
AEF will also accept donations of new backpacks and school supplies between now and Monday, Aug. 6, at the following locations:
- Alameda Fire Station No. 2, 635 Pacific Ave.
- Tucker’s Ice Cream, 1349 Park St.
- Coffee and Tea Traders, 883 Island Dr.
