School Board Seats Harris

On Wednesday, July 22, the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Board of Education voted to appoint Gray Harris to the seat left empty when Niel Tam passed away on May 24.

Harris taught elementary school for six years in Alameda and served as president of the Alameda Education Association, the union that represents Alameda teachers. Harris was one of five candidates who applied for Tam’s seat. Hazel Lau, Michael McMahon, Anne McKereghan and Dorota Sawicka also applied for the position.

The board interviewed each of the candidates and each addressed the board on July 22. Harris won the seat by a 4-1 vote with board member Gary Lym casting his vote for McKereghan.

Harris will stand for election next year.
