Sand Castle Contest Results Are In

Courtesy ARPD      This charming tower of turtles earned the esteem of fellow sand sculptors and architects at this year’s Sand Castle & Sculpture Contest.

 

The 51st Sand Castle/Sand Sculpture contest took place last Saturday, June 10, at the Robert Crown Memorial Beach.

The Urban Gorillas from Alameda and Oakland won the Sand Castle best-in-show award. The Shimohan family from Walnut Creek won the Sand Sculpture best-in-show award.

Several other awards were handed out during the event. Lucian, Martell, Kia, August, Cameron, Mateen and Mattis from Alameda and Oakland won first place in the sand castle 12-and-under (12U) category. Cub Pack 1015 of Alameda took second place, while the tram of Kristi, Tammy and friend from San Francisco finished in third place. 

The Urban Gorillas: PM, Crystal, Bill, Juliet, John M, John H, Sarah, H, Ryan, Jeff, Kersti, Germ from Alameda won first place in the 13-and-over sand castle category. Arjo and Finn families and friends from Alameda won second place, while Megan and Darrel from San Francisco finished in third place.

The Chop family from Alameda won the sand castle family category for their Small Size, Big Mind castle. The Eastwood family from Alameda came in second place, while the Fogg family from Concord finished in third place.

Jaz and Zack from Alameda won first place in the 12U category for their Pizza Deep Fish sculpture. Nenna, Angelina, Jafme and Justin from Alameda came in second place for their Dolphin sculpture. Ariel and Cali from Vacaville placed third for their Starfish artwork.

Team Deanery — Judith, Art, Sam, Nichol, Andi, Gary, Jessica, Justin, Ashlee, Mac, Killeen from Alameda — won the 13-and-over sculpture competition with their Moana Goddess Te Fiti sculpture. The Vipers — Maddie and Allyssa from Alameda — came in second place for their Volleyball Mermaid project, while Happy Journey — Ariu, Zhipeng, Nelson and Highland from San Francisco — finished third with their Lion’s Head sculpture.

The Shimohan family also won the sand sculpture family competition for their Family Faces project. The Hodges family from Alameda came in second place for their Baby Grow sculpture, while the Beach Squad from Vacaville finished in third place for Scrabble artwork.

Forty-six sand castle plots and 67 sand sculpture plots were created during the competition by 395 participants.
