Running Festival on Tap this Weekend

This weekend the Bank of Marin’s Alameda Running Festival takes place at Alameda Point with an expanded Health and Fitness Expo, beer garden, live music after Sunday’s half marathon and three flat and unique run courses that showcase the beauty of the Island.

A 5-kilometer run will kick off the weekend’s events at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. This year the 5k, along with the Health and Fitness Expo is presented by Penumbra Inc.

“Penumbra is honored to be a part of the Alameda Running Festival,” said Adam Elsesser, Penumbra CEO. “The festival combines Penumbra’s commitment to health and wellness with our dedication to the community of Alameda, which we proudly call home.”

Saturday’s events will conclude at noon with a one-mile Family Fun Run. The spectator friendly run will circle the expo lawn and end under the finisher arch. Both Saturday events are raising money for Alameda Education Foundation and Alameda Meals on Wheels.

Sunday’s events begin at 7 a.m. with a half marathon that will show off 13.1 miles of unique scenery incorporating both sides of the Island, the beautiful marinas, parks and waterways that make Alameda a great backdrop for a running festival. This flat and fast course will highlight the historic Alameda Naval Air Station.

A 10-kilometer run will start at 7:30 a.m. and follow parts of both the half marathon and 5-kilometer course. As on Saturday, all Sunday’s events will start and end at the Expo lawn adjacent City Hall West.

The Penumbra Health and Fitness expo will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Whether joining the races or not, the public is invited to visit the expo with its 25 vendors, beer garden and live music on Sunday courtesy of The Saloons. Ample athlete food will be available along with Scolari’s food truck.

Runners will have the ability to pick up their runners packets at the USS Hornet Museum on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., or at the expo on Saturday for the Family Fun Run, 10K and Half Marathon.
Late registration will be available at the Saturday Expo.
