Round One of Fry Bros. Tourney


The first round of the 88th Annual Fry Brothers Memorial Match Play Tournament took place Thursday, May 3, on the Earl Fry Course.

Match play rules places two golfers against each other and the player with the best score wins. In Flight A, Tai Chewpanich beat Dot Moody 1-up — up one hole after all 18 holes were played. Cheryl Saxton also beat Claire Loud 1-up. Maggie Lindquist defeated Stephanie Bellato 3-and-2 — up three holes with two holes to play. Lynn Kobatake took down Jenny Bae 4-and-3. Madeline Sally was one of the winners in Flight B. Sally defeated Diane Hughes 4-and-3. Debbie Adams took down Kimmie Sung 3-and-2. Fran Mori was victorious over Yvette Whiteside 2-and-1. Lastly, Phoebe Yu beat Sarah Valentine 5-and-3.

In Flight C, Chris Alibrandi took down Sonia Kwak 2-up. Pat O’Hara advanced due to a forfeit by Agnes McKinlay. Bonnie Kim defeated Denise Gasti 2-and-1. Barbara Mickle will advance after beating Linda Ferrill 4-and-3.

Pam Curtis was one of the victors in Flight D. Curtis defeated Janet Rhee 2-and-1. Susan Logan took down Ann Ching 1-up. Claudia Leed beat Bobbie Hoepner 5-and-4 to advance to the next round. Finally, Kay Park was victorious over Sandi Kaney 1-up after 19 holes. 

Sally won the closest-to-the-hole competition on the fourth hole. She shot her ball 11’ 9” from the pin. Chewpanich came in second place at 23’ 5” from the hole. Yu won the competition on the 15th hole. Her ball landed 4’ 9” from the hole. Leed finished second with her shot traveling 22’ 5” from the hole.

Winners of the first round will advance to the second round of the tournament. The losers will take part in a consolation bracket. The second round takes place today on the Earl Fry Course.
