Red Rocks Compete in Regional Volleyball Tournament
Several Alameda Red Rock women’s volleyball teams competed at the 28th Annual Northern California Volleyball Association California Kickoff Tournament on Jan. 15 to 17 at the Sacramento Convention Center.
15U
Two Red Rock teams competed in the 15-and-under (15U) open division tournament — there were eight tournament divisions based on age. Red Rock 15 Taylor, coached by Taylor Elliott and Jhunel Abellon — teams are named after their head coach — competed in pool 4 of the round-robin portion, while Red Rock 15 Leslie, coached by Leslie Blakely and Azariah Hill, competed in pool 6.
In Pool 6, Team Leslie went 2-1 in the four-team pool on Sunday, Jan. 16. They defeated Marin Juniors 15 Green, 2-0 (25-12, 25-15) and MotherLode 15 of Sonora, Ca., 2-0 (26-24, 25-19). The team lost their third match, 2-1 (25-16, 14-25, 8-15), to Core 15 Elite of Dublin. Team Leslie advanced to the challenge match stage on Jan. 17. They defeated Silver State 15 Brad of Carson Nev., 2-1 (25-16, 19-25, 12-15), to earn a spot in the eight-team Gold Bracket, the highest bracket of the division. The team lost in the first round to the San Francisco Tremors 15 Hawks, 2-0 (8-25,20-25). Team Leslie finished in fifth place out of 29 teams in the tournament.
Team Taylor went 1-2 in pool 4. They won a forfeit match over Pulse 15 Black. Then lost to Main Beach 15 Gold of Santa Cruz, 2-0 (12-25, 15-25), and Aspire 15 Black of Folsom, 2-0 (14-25, 22-25). They lost to SF Tremors 15 Hawks in the challenge match, 2-0 (9-25, 4-25).
The team took part in the Bronze Bracket tournament. They lost in the first round, 2-1 (25-18, 15-25, 8-15), to Rage 15 Josh of Ripon. Team Taylor finished in 21st place.
16U
Red Rock Mariah, coach by Mariah Cardenas, Allan Nguyen, competed in the 16U open division tournament. They went 1-2 in pool 3 on Jan. 16, but their lone victory was a forfeit. They lost, 2-0 (17-25, 20-25), to Marin Juniors 16 Black and 2-0 (15-25, 15-25) to Academy 16 HP Denny of Atherton. Later that day they lost their crossover match — where teams compete against teams from other pools — 2-0 (13-25, 20-25), to Silver State 16 James.
Team Mariah competed in the Bronze Bracket where they won their first-round matchup, 2-0 (25-19, 25-14), against Force Performance Volleyball Club (FPVC) 16 Ren of Elk Grove. They lost in the semifinals, 2-0 (24-26, 18-25), to Mountain View Volleyball Club (MVVC) G 16 Red.
Team Mariah finished the tournament in 19th place out of 29 teams.
13U
Red Rock 13 Erica, coached by Erica Hansen and Azariah Hill, finished third out of 13 teams in the 13U club tournament division. Team Erica dominated pool 1 on Saturday, Jan. 15, going 2-0 in the three-team pool without losing a set. They defeated FPVC 13 Hugo, 2-0 (25-14, 25-9) and Peninsula Starlings 13 Amaya, 2-0 (25-16, 25-11). Team Erica advanced to the crossover round where they defeated Morgan Hill 13, 2-0 (25-11, 25-18). Team Erica advanced to play in the Gold Bracket on Sunday, Jan. 16. They were the one-seed in the eight-team bracket. They took care of Marin Juniors 13 Slate, 2-1 (24-26, 25-18, 15-10), in the first round. However, they were upended by four-seed MVVC G 13 Black, 2-1 (13-25, 25-18, 13-15) in the semifinal.
Other results
Red Rock 17 Ashia, coached by Ashia Joseph and Alex O’Sullivan, finished 13th in the 14-team 17U open division tournament.
Red Rock 14 Jhunel, coached by Jhunel Abellon and Alvin Lee, finished 17th out of 23 teams in the 14U open division.
Red Rock 11/12 Eddie, coached by Eddie Chen and Nicky Hagan, finished ninth out of 11 teams in the 12U open division.
