Red Rock Volleyball Teams Compete in Vegas

Several Alameda Red Rock girls’ volleyball teams competed in the Red Rock Rave Volleyball tournament March 11 to 13 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Red Rock Alameda 16-Mu team, coached by Mu Chang, finished 35th out of 114 teams in the 16-Liberty bracket at the event.

On Day 1, the team started the tournament going 2-1 in the round 1 pool 15 section. They lost to Mountain Peak Volleyball 16 club of Mountain Peak, Utah, 2-0 (25-16, 25-18) in their first game. They rebounded with 2-0 victories over Oregon Premier Volleyball Club 16-National (25-6, 25-9) of Portland, Ore. and Tstreet Inland Empire (25-21, 25-22) of Claremont, Calif. The team finished second out of four teams in the round-robin tournament.

On Day 2, the club went 1-2 in the round 2 pool 14 section. They lost their first two matches. First, a 2-0 (25-17,25-16) defeat to the Vision 16 Blue team of San Jose. They also lost, 2-1 (19-25,25-15,15-11), to Fresno Heat 16-National in their second contest. After the first two losses, Red Rock Mu rebounded with a 2-0 (25-22,25-21) win over Pipeline 16-Adidas of Corona, Calif. The Red Rock Mu team finished third out of four teams in the round two round-robin tournament.

Team Mu’s 3-3 record placed them in the four-team Bronze B final tournament bracket. In the semifinal, Team Mu faced Athena 16-2-Black of Beaverton, Ore. They took down Athena, 2-0 (30-28,25-21), in a highly contested match to advance to the final. In the final, the Red Rocks lost a three-set thriller to Austin Junior Volleyball 16-Helix of Austin, Tex., 2-1 (25-21,22-25,15-13).

The Red Rock Alameda 16-Mariah team, coached by Mariah Cardenas, also competed in the 16-Liberty bracket at the event. Team Mariah finished 109th out of 114 teams. They went 0-7 overall over the three-day tournament.

The Red Rock Alameda 17-Ashia team, Ashia Joseph, finished 45th out of 56 teams in the 17-Liberty tournament. The team went 0-3 in the round 1 pool 4 section. In the first game, Team Aisha lost, 2-0 (25-17,25-9), to Texas Advantage West 17-Royal. They followed that with a 2-0 (25-15,25-22) loss to Tstreet IE 17-Taylor in the second game. They lost their third match of the bracket to Catalyst 17-Green of Meadows Place, Tex., 2-0 (25-17,25-19).

After losing their first two matches in the round 2 pool 4 section, Team Aisha won their first match of the event, 2-1 (21-25,25-15,15-9), against Spiral 17-Black of Chandler, Ariz.

The win gave them the confidence they needed. They used that momentum to win the six-team flight 3 tournament. They defeated in Dynamite U17-Black of Tampa, Fla., 2-0 (28-26,27-25), in the play-in game. They took down AZ Sky 17N1, 2-0 (25-16,25-16), in the semifinal match. Lastly, they defeated Mesa Juniors 17-Black of Mesa, Colorado, 2-0 (25-23,25-19), in the final.
