Recreation Department Has Full Schedule of Sports Stuff for 2017
The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD) is offering competitive sports leagues for Alameda adults and youth in the upcoming months.
Adults
The ARPD adult basketball league will kick off in February 2017, but signups for the league will begin on Dec. 21. Games for the league will take place on Sundays between Feb. 19 and May 7, except for April 16, from 6 to 10 p.m. Games will be held at Alameda Point Gym, 1101 West Red Line Ave. The program will offer three levels of 5-on-5 basketball. There will be an open competitive level, an open recreational level and an over-40 level.
The combined team fee is $650 for Alameda residents and $700 for non-resident teams. Participants must be at least 18 years of age. For more information, visit https://alamedaca.gov/recreation/basketball.
ARPD will partner with vbmatch.com to host adult volleyball leagues and tournaments for the Alameda community. The league offers a high level of competition for players who competed at the high school varsity level or higher. There will be leagues for all women, all men and unisex teams. The next league calendar will start in March. Games will take place at the Alameda Point Gym.

ARPD is also offering tennis lessons to Alameda adults. Whether you’re a beginner playing for the first time, or trying to hone your skills, ARPD is offering lessons for any skill set. Each class includes instructor tips, drills, strategy and tactics.
ARPD is also offering morning and evening lessons to accommodate any schedule. The morning session will take place Mondays Jan. 2 to Feb. 6, Feb. 20 to March 27, and April 10 to May 15, from 9 to 10 a.m.
The evening sessions will offer sessions for beginners and advanced players. Sessions for evening classes are Tuesday and Thursday from Jan. 3 to Jan. 19, Jan. 31 to Feb. 17, Feb. 28 to March 16, March 28 to April 13, April 25 to May 11 and May 23 to June 18. Beginner classes are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., while advanced sessions are scheduled for 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
All classes will take place at Fairfield Tennis Court at Lower Washington Park, 740 Central Ave. Sessions are $100 to sign up. All participants must be 18 years old or over.
Youth Sports
ARPD is offering soccer lessons for Alameda toddlers. The Kidz Love Soccer program includes skill demonstrations, fun games and instructional scrimmages. Sessions are on Wednesday and Saturdays at Lower Washington Park.
The tot pre-soccer league is for 3-and-a half to five year olds and the soccer technique 1 lessons are for five to six year olds. Soccer technique 2 lessons are for seven to 10 year olds. The first season for soccer lessons are Wednesdays from Jan. 25 to March 15 and Saturdays Jan. 28 to March 18. The second season is Wednesdays April 12 to May 31 and from Saturdays April 22 to June 17.
