President’s Cup Golf Tourney Underway

The first round of the three-round 53rd Annual Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) President’s Cup Tournament took place last Thursday, June 9, at the Earl Fry Course.

This is one of AWGC’s most unique tournaments. Unlike most tournaments participants are not broken into flight groups depending on their handicap scores. Instead, the golfers all play in one group and the handicap is subtracted from each participants’ gross score, giving them a net score.

Dot Moody and Veronica Chang lead the way after 18 holes. Both golfers ended round one shooting a six-under 66. Diane Hughes is in third place with a three-under- 69, while Claire Loud finished the round in fourth place with a one-under 71. Pam Curtis and Wilda More shot even-par 72s to tie for fifth place.

Twenty-three of the 29 golfers who participated shot above par in the event, including Angie Vaccarezza who shot a one-over 73 for seventh place. Debbie Adams, Judy Eng and Jaime Totsubo finished the first round in a three-way tie for ninth place with matching three-over 75s.

The tournament field is tight in the middle of the pack. Ninth place (Eng, to Totubo) to 19h place is separated by just three strokes. Carole Evans, Bonnie Byung Hwa Kim, Barbara Mickle and Jane Sullwold finished in a four-way tie for 16th place at six-over 78.

Three of the 29 participants withdrew after the first round. Tai Chewpanich, Donna Cooper and Yoon all left the tournament before it was over.
The second round will be played today, while the third and final round will take place next Thursday, June 23.

The winner of our President’s Cup will represent AWGC in the Bay Area Tournament of Champions next year where all the net and gross champions of all the Women’s Clubs in the Bay Area face off to determine the “Bay Area Champions.”
