Power Company Plans Undergrounding for 2018

The Underground Utilities District Nomination Board has recommended that Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) move overhead utility lines below ground in seven areas. The board began meeting in June 2016 and completed its work last month. Board members reviewed dozens of areas before they voted to recommend undergrounding in the following seven locations:

• Otis Drive from High Street to Broadway
• Webster Street intersections from Central Avenue to Eagle Avenue
• Broadway from Buena Vista Avenue to Clement Avenue
• Broadway from La Jolla Drive to Encinal Avenue
• Central Avenue from Eighth Street to Webster Street, including Garden Way
• Fernside Boulevard from Encinal Avenue to High Street
• Park Street from San Jose Avenue to Otis Drive

Four members of the public and one member of the Public Works Department made up the board. Its recommendations will now move to the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for review. Public feedback will be sought before TAC sends a list of proposed districts to the City Council for final approval.

After the public process is complete, AMP plans to start construction in the selected districts in fiscal year 2018. Currently, about half of the city’s power lines are underground.
