Pilots Win Baseball Title
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) baseball team won the North Coast Section (NCS) Div. IV championship with a 4-1 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo Saturday, June 3. The NCS final was played at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.
The Pilots drew first blood with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bruins rebounded with a run in the top of the second, but that was the only run they would score. The Pilots came back in the fifth inning with two insurance runs that proved to be unnecessary.
Sophomore Hudson Hennigh led the Pilots with two RBIs. He went 1-of-4 from the plate. Senior Carson Bridges was outstanding from the plate going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Freshmen Michael Shih and Zachary Karch had the other RBIs in the contest.
Junior Joseph Boyden got the win for the Pilots. He pitched five innings, allowing a run, three hits, while striking out one batter. Hunter Hennigh came on in relief to pitch two scoreless innings, while striking out three batters.
SJND won four games on its way to the Div. IV crown. They were the three-seed in the NCS playoff tournament. They beat Salesian of Richmond 5-1 in round one on May 23. Then they took out Fort Bragg 6-2 on May 26. The Pilots shut out two-seed Kelseyville 4-0 in the semifinal round on May 30.
SJND completes the 2017 season with a 20-8 overall record and 7-5 in the Bay County East League. Last year the team won the NCS Div. V title with a 10-1 win over College Prep of Oakland.
The SJND softball team went 11-6 overall and 7-1 in league play. The team qualified for the NCS Div. IV playoffs, but lost in the first round 7-4 to Piedmont on May 24.
The Alameda High baseball team went 17-11 overall and 11-5 in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Foothill League. The team won the league tournament with a 4-3 win over Berkeley on May 18.
The Hornets beat Concord 6-0 in the first round of the NCS Div. II playoffs, but lost to Arroyo of San Lorenzo 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
The Alameda softball team went 9-14 overall and 4-6 in the Foothill League on the season. However, they did beat rival Encinal 22-3 on March 27.
The Encinal baseball team went 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the WACC Shoreline League. The team qualified for the NCS Div. III playoffs, but lost in the first round to Kennedy of Fremont 7-3 on May 23.
The Encinal softball team went 5-13 overall and 4-6 in the Shoreline League. The team did beat SJND 17-11 on March 17.
