Pilots Compete in Clovis Meet

The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s cross-country team finished eighth in the women’s 5,000-meter small school competition at the 42nd Asics Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno on Oct. 9.

The Pilots were one of 25 teams to compete in the team competition.

The first Pilot to cross the finish line was senior Natalie Perez. She finished 18th overall out of 176 participants with a time of 19:52.3.

SJND juniors Nicole Chan and Amber Cox finished the race almost simultaneously. Chan finished 42nd overall with a time of 20:43.5, while Cox finished 43rd overall with a time of 20:43.9.

SJND teammates Jaida Sieu and Isabella Corral also finished just four tenths of a second apart. Sieu, a senior, finished 109th overall with time of 23:22.3, while Corral, a sophomore, finished in 110th place with a time of 23:33.7.

The top five finishers for the Pilots gave SJND an overall team score of 279. University High School of San Francisco won the team competition with a score of 67. The team with the lowest score wins. The Red Devils top five competitors finished 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 24th.

Ashlyn Boothby of Scotts Valley High School in Scotts Valley, Calif, finished first overall with a time of 17:57. 2.

Men’s Competition

The SJND men’s team finished 12th out of 24 teams in the men’s 5,000-meter small school competition. SJND senior Arlo Rucker was the first Pilot to cross the finish line with a time of 17:11.4, giving him 27th place overall. Pilot junior Max Reeve finished 38th overall with a time of 17:22. SJND senior Thomas McCue finished in 56th place with a time of 17:45.8.

Junior George Jensen earned a 105th place finished after completing the race with a time of 19:01.7. His sophomore teammate Anthony Garcia didn’t finish far behind with a time of 19:05.4 for 108th place.

The Pilots had a team score of 296. The Nueva School of San Mateo won the team competition with a team score of 96. There top five athletes finished seventh, 11th, 22nd, 23rd and 55th.

Senior Daniel Winter from St.Mary’s High School in Stockton finished first overall out of 170 participants. Winter completed the distance in 15:28.8. His teammate Elijah Sullivan finished fourth with a time of 15:53.7.

The SJND cross-country team will next compete in the 38th P. Wilder Mariner Cross Country Invitational Saturday, Oct. 16 at Hayward High School.
