Pilot Runners Win in Hayward

Perez, Annis shine on St. Joseph Notre Dame High School’s track team

Two St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) track-and-field athletes won two individual races at the second Bay County League-East (BCL-E) meet of the season on March 5 at Chabot College in Hayward.
Senior Emily Perez won the women’s 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, while junior Zavier Annis won the men’s 100- and 200-meter races.

Emily was dominant in her two track-and-field league wins. She finished the 1,600-meter meet with a time of 5:09.91. She outpaced the second-place finisher by more than 20 seconds. Head Royce School of Oakland athlete Ona Ortiz came in second with a time of 5:30.44. 

Emily was even more impressive in the 3,200-meter race. She crossed the finish line in 12:09.27. A Head-Royce runner finished second again. This time it was Isabel Haas who finished almost 50 seconds behind Emily. Haas finished with a time of 12:57.14. 

Emily also won the 3,200-meter race in the first BCL-E league meet of the year on Feb. 14. In that race she crossed the finish line in 11:31.54.

Emily competed in the races with her Pilot teammates including her sister Natalie. Natalie, a freshman, finished fifth in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:43.37. Sophomore Pilot Claire Nocon finished in 11th place with a time of 616.45. Freshman Jaida Sieu completed the race with a time of 6:18.26. Twenty-three athletes competed in the race.

Emily was the only Pilot to compete in the women’s 3,200-meter race. Ten athletes competed in the 3,200-meter race. 

Annis was equally impressive in his performances in the 100- and 200-meter races. He finished the 100-meter race with a time of 11.64. Bentley School of Lafayette junior Reese Downs finished second with a time of 12.12. SJND Emanuelle Nwaukoni was the second Pilot to cross the finish line with a time of 12.78 for 18th place. Junior Jayelen Jones finished in 21st place with a time of 25.96. Fifty-one runners competed in the race.

Annis won the 200-meter race with a time of 23.98. Downs finished second again with a time of 24.47. Pilot junior Diego Salgues finished 18th with a time of 25.47. SJND senior Gabriel Trevino placed 24th with a time of 25.87. Fifty athletes competed in the race.

SJND also won the men’s 4-by-100-meter team race with an accumulative time of 46.93. The team consists of Marcus Abendanio, Annis, Zach Ramos and Ethan Doan. 

Other notable results include Natalie finishing fourth, out of 20 competitors, in the women’s 800-meter race. She completed the race with a time of 2:41.42. 

Salgues finished fourth, out of 36 participants, in the men’s 800-meter race. He finished with a time of 2:09.14. Pilot junior Rowan O’Brien finished right behind Salgues with a time of 2:09.22 for fifth place. 

Pilots’ junior Taylor Viera finished fourth, out of 38 participants, in the women’s 200-meter race. She finished with a time of 28.77.

O’Brien finished fourth, out of 43 competitors, in the men’s 1,600-meter race. He completed the distance in 4:42.93.
