Veterans Meet, Host Memorial Day Service
Vietnam Veterans of America. Chapter 400, meet this evening, Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Alameda Veterans Memorial Building, 2203 Central Ave. Chapter 400 will host Alameda’s Memorial Day services next Monday, May 25, at Veterans Memorial Park at the intersection of Doolittle and Island drives.
Mayor Trish Spencer will welcome those in attendance at 11 a.m. Captain Edward "Ward" Sandlin, Eleventh Coast Guard District Chief of Incident Management, will deliver the keynote address. LCDR David Stroud, USN, will serve as chaplain.
The ceremony will last approximately one hour.
Vote for Your Favorite Local Women Artists
Applications are now being accepted for the Alameda Women Artists (AWA) 2015 Annual Art Awards.
The AWA organization is offering art awards to two female artists in Alameda — one to an adult artist and the other to a student artist. Each winner will be awarded this year’s endowment of $250 and their award-winning artwork will be exhibited at the AWA Alameda Museum Show to be held in October.

Golden Gear Nominations Open Now
Rhythmix Cultural Works has opened nominations for the second annual Golden Gear Awards given to three East Bay artists.
The chosen three will be recognized by the organization for their outstanding contributions in three categories: visual arts, performing arts and arts education. Winners will receive their awards at Rhythmix’s Wine, Women & Song Spectacular on Saturday, Aug. 22.
Nominations are open to the public. To nominate an artist, one must visit Rhythmix’s Golden Gear website at www.rhythmix.org/golden-gear-2015.html. Click one of the three boxes, visual arts, performing arts and arts education, then enter the name of the artist, what medium the artist use, which East Bay city does the artist live and/or work in, why the nominator is choosing the artist and the artist’s website or portfolio link.
Nominations will be accepted until Friday, May 29.
