New Council Sworn In
Mayor Trish Spencer thanks her supporters at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
Mayor Trish Spencer, Vice-Mayor Frank Matarrese and Councilman Jim Oddie took their seats at Tuesday evening’s City Council meeting. Spencer filled the seat vacated by Marie Gilmore, who narrowly lost to Spencer in a nail-biting race for the city’s top spot. Matarrese and Oddie filled the spots occupied by Stewart Chen, who lost his bid for a four-year term, and Lena Tam who termed out.
The city thanked and honored Gilmore, Chen and Tam before the new mayor and City Councilmen took their oaths of office. Spencer took the oath twice so that everyone who wanted to witness her taking office could do so. She invited members of the audience under the age of 18 to join her each time she took the oath.
Once the Council was seated outgoing Vice-Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft nominated Matarrese to take her place as vice-mayor. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Ashcraft also pointed out she, as outgoing vice-mayor, had something in common with Matarrese as the new vice-mayor, and Spencer, as the new mayor: they are each a parent to a set of twins.
