NCS Basketball Tourneys Begin
All six Alameda high school basketball teams are competing in the North Coast Section (NCS) playoffs in their respective divisions.
The Alameda men’s team (11-18) has been slotted in the 11th seed — out of 15 teams — in the Div. II playoffs. They faced six-seed Las Lomas of Walnut Creek on Feb. 23. The winner plays the winner of El Cerrito and Acalanes of Lafayette tomorrow.
Encinal (15-13) was awarded the ninth seed — out of 12 teams — in the NCS Division III playoffs. They played Analy of Sebastopol on Feb. 23. The winner will take on number one seed Moreau Catholic of Hayward tomorrow.
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) team (18-9) were given the one seed in the Division V playoffs. The team took on Sonoma Academy in the opening round yesterday. The winner will take on the winner of Oakland College Prep and Mendocino on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Last year the team advanced to the semifinal. In 2014, the team beat Branson of Ross 49-48 to win the NCS title.
The Alameda women’s team (13-13) got its first taste of postseason play, after not taking part in a league tournament, with a contest against San Lorenzo in the Div. II opening round on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
The Hornets were given the sixth seed — out of 15 teams — while Rebels were awarded the 11th seed.
The winner will take on the winner of Northgate of Walnut Creek and Newark Memorial tomorrow.
The Encinal women’s team (20-8) was given the eighth seed — out of 15 teams — in the Div. III playoffs. They went up against ninth-seed Moreau Catholic in the first round on Feb. 23. The winner plays Miramonte of Orinda tomorrow.
The SJND women’s team (20-8) took on Holy Names of Oakland in the first round of the Div. V playoffs yesterday. The winner takes on the winner of St. Vincent de Paul and International of San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 27.
The Pilots lost to Valley Christian of San Jose 70-55 in the NCS final last year.
