Mystery Goo Identified

Mystery Goo Identified

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that the mysterious gray goo that killed 170 seabirds along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay last month contained a mixture of non-petroleum-based fats and synthetic oils. These include silicone fluids, tung oils, resin, as well as edible and inedible seed oils from plants.

The department stated that its researchers have not yet determined the source of the material, which had degraded to a sticky, thick consistency that was very difficult to remove from the feathers of the affected birds. It severely compromising their ability to stay warm, float, fly and locate food.

The investigation continues. The department asks that anyone with information on the incident, call CalTIP at 888-334-2258.

Researching a bit on similar symptoms of other seabirds who died due to toxic mystery goo, I found this on seabirds dying from Palm Oil dumped in the sea off of England's south coast. The seabird's symptoms and description of waxy substance that paralyzed seabirds is very similar to what happened here last month http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2271691/South-coast-seabirds-sti...

If there was a rogue oil tanker(dumping) that leaked this, or dumped by a local business or refinery, it should be investigated. Tung Oil + resin, + seed oils --- sounds like furniture refinishing/production. That said, PepsiCo is one of the largest users of Palm Oil http://abc7news.com/society/environmental-activists-blast-pepsicos-use-o...
