The Alameda Neptune men’s water polo team finished in 24th place — out of 48 teams — in the Classic Division at the National Junior Olympic Water Polo Tournament last month in Orange County.

More than 100 teams competed in the 18-and-under men’s tournament over two days on July 25 and 26. The Neptune team started the tournament out with a 10.3-10.1 win over Modesto Stanislaus on July 25, in the first round at the La Mirada Aquatic Center.

They lost their second match 14-4 to Riverside Water Polo. They quickly rebounded in their third match of the day with a 12-7 victory over Viper Pigeon South.

The second day of the tournament proved to be unlucky for the boys from Alameda. The competitions moved to Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo.

They lost 17-6 to the Redlands Renegades in the first matchup on Sunday; they then lost 12-3 at the hands of the Sacramento Polo Black Squad; the Golden State Aquatics team beat Alameda 15-12; the Neptune team lost a close 12-9 contest to the Lamorinda Gold B team; and finally they lost 13-7 to Set Black.

Because of the stacked up losses the team did not advance to the championship division.
