Main Street Ferry Terminal to Close Temporarily Next Month for Repairs
The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA), the operating agency for the San Francisco Bay Ferry service, announced the Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal will begin a temporary closure next month. The closure will begin on Monday, Oct. 23, and is expected to reopen on Jan. 2, 2024.
The temporary closure will allow WETA to perform the $10 million Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal Refurbishment Project. The project will repair and replace the existing aging terminal infrastructure and bring the site into compliance with current seismic safety requirements.
Improvements include bridge and foundation replacement, gangway replacement, float demolition and replacement, as well as electrical and water utility upgrades, according to the project’s website. Also, the project design includes elements to facilitate future electrification of the terminal for zero-emission ferry vessels.
During the closure, San Francisco Bay Ferry’s Alameda Seaplane route will operate seven days a week, including special temporary weekend service. The daily Oakland & Alameda route schedule will also be adjusted during the closure. Current departures to and from Oakland on weekdays will be maintained, but weekend departure times on the route will be adjusted.
Alternatives to the Main Street Ferry Terminal include:
- Downtown San Francisco from Alameda: Use the Alameda Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal for weekday and limited weekend service during the closure.
- South San Francisco from Alameda: Ferries to South San Francisco will only be available out of the Oakland Ferry Terminal during the closure.
- Chase Center from Alameda: Ferry service to Chase Center will only be available from the Oakland Ferry Terminal during the closure.
- Oakland from Alameda: The Alameda Short Hop, which connects the Oakland and Main Street Alameda terminals, will be suspended during the closure. AC Transit Line 96 is recommended as an alternative.
There is free, validated parking available at the Washington Street Garage near the Oakland terminal.
Additional information for passengers, including temporary schedule changes in effect on Oct. 23, is now available at www.sanfranciscobayferry.com/msa-closure.
The project is being funded with Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grants and Alameda County transportation sales tax revenues through Measures B and BB.
