Local Two-Person Team Wins First in Sailing Regatta Series

Sophia Browne and Sean Tolan were presented with the Dave Diola Memorial Cup on Monday, Oct. 1. The award is handed out to the winner of a race or a series of races in the Bay Area Youth Sailing (BAYS) Regatta Series. The duo competed in the Club FJ division. 

Browne and Tolan sailed a Club FJ (a 13.3-foot sailboat) in the Winter BAYs Regatta series, which consisted of four local regattas, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco Yacht Club, Encinal Yacht Club and the Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation. The pair participated in the grades eight-to-12 division. The team took the first place award in the overall BAYs series as well. The award was presented by the Pacific Inter Club Yacht Association (PICYA), which promotes recreational boating, youth sailing and many other civic activities. 

Browne is a student at Acalanes High in Lafayette, while Tolan attends Nea Community Learning Center. Both are members of the Encinal Yacht Club. Browne restarted the sailing team at her high school. They will now compete in district regattas. Tolan is a member of the Alameda High sailing team.

Dave Diola was a well-known sailor in the Santa Cruz 27 fleet before his sudden death in June of 1996 at the age of 46.
