Local Teen Steps Up for Safety

To earn his Emergency Preparedness Badge in pursuit of Eagle Scout rank, James Peter (JP) Chiu (right), a 10th-grade student at St. Joseph Notre Dame in Alameda and a member of Boy Scout Troup 556 in San Leandro, raised  $3,000 using crowdfunding from family, friends and businesses to purchase disaster-emergency backpacks for 50 clients at the Alameda Food Bank.

Each backpack has a radio, food, water, poncho, work gloves, dust mask, first aid kit, multi-plier tool, whistle, duct tape, survival blanket, bio-hazard bag, tissue wipes, a fire extinguisher and an activity bag for children with a stuffed animal. He personally handed out the disaster kits to clients last week.

“Our clients were thrilled to receive this valuable safety equipment and clearly touched by JP’s heartfelt gesture,” said AFB volunteer Margie Benziger.
