Local Teams Race in Cross Country Championship

The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished second in the Bay County League East championship meet last Thursday, Nov. 7, at Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland.

The men’s team finished second to Head-Royce High School (HRHS) of Oakland. Nine teams total competed in the event. The Pilots finished with a team score of 51, while the Jayhawks scored 42 (the team with the lowest score wins).

The Pilots had five players finish in the top 14. Senior Rowan O’Brien led the way with a sixth place finish out of the 68 competitors. He finished the 2.6-mile race with a time of 14:50.57. Junior Christopher Ramirez finished eighth with a time of 15:01.54. Senior Christian Granados finished 10th with a time of 15:17.80. 

The fourth Pilot to cross the finish line was senior Ellis Cervantes who came in 13th with a time of 15:34.17. Sophomore Thomas McCue finished right behind Cervantes in 14th place with a time of 15:37.07 to round out the Pilots top five. 

Just the top-five sprinters on a team are counted toward the team score.

HRHS senior Ethan Ash was the first Jayhawk to complete the race with a time of 14:15.71 for third place. Ash’s teammate senior Aidan Wogan finished seventh with a time of 14:53.57. Two spots behind him was his teammate junior Brandon Byrd with a time of 15:08.47. Jayhawk freshman Niccolo Lena finished 11th with a time of 15:21.86, while HRHS junior Loucas Xenakis finished 12th with a time of 15:25.09.

Other Pilots who competed included sophomore Arlo Rucker (16th place) and senior Dominic Padre (20th place). 

Women’s competition
The women’s cross country team also finished behind HRHS. SJND posted a team score of 60, while HRHS had a score of 27. Seven teams competed in the meet.

SJND junior Aila Owens led the Pilots. She finished third overall out of 52 participants. She finished the 2.6-mile race with a time of 16:51.86. Her teammate Natalie Perez, a sophomore, finished fifth with a time of 17:09.35. 

SJND junior Claire Nocon finished 15th with a time of 19:16.50. Her teammate sophomore Jaida Sieu came in 16th place with a time of 19:26.94. Pilot freshman Amber Fox rounded out the team’s top five with a 22nd place showing at 20:00.04.

The Jayhawks won the meet by having five of the top 10 finishers in the event. HRHS senior Kaya Hano won the event with a time of 16:16.91. Her teammate Ona Ortiz-Guideman, a sophomore, finished second at 16:48.94. Junior Anya Krishman came in sixth place with a time of 17:52.91. Sophomore Sophie Wayman (18:12.05) and senior Isabel Haas (18:38.21) finished eighth and 10th, respectively. 

Both men’s and women’s teams will compete in the North Coast Section cross country championships on Nov. 23.
