Local Student Athletes Named to All-League Teams
Multiple Alameda city high school athletes were named to their respective All-League teams for the 2022-2023 spring sports season.
Baseball
Alameda High School (AHS) junior pitcher Cole Aney is one of a trio of Hornets to make the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Foothill League First Team. He was joined by junior Max Cohen and senior Luis Licea. AHS sophomore Alijah Meadows made the Foothill League Second Team. He was joined by his teammates sophomore Julian Munoz and senior Kai Shimp. Junior Louis Sanchez was named honorable mention.
Encinal High School (EHS) sophomore outfielder Anthony Wilson was named the WACC Shoreline League player of the year. He was also placed on the Shoreline First Team. According to MaxPreps, he had a .414 batting average, and accumulated 24 hits and 12 RBIs in 18 games. EHS senior first baseman Shaan Castro and freshman utility player Darren Olsen also made the Shoreline League First Team. EHS juniors Cruz Kelly and Angus Olaes, and freshman Eric Proctor made the Shoreline League Second Team. Freshman Evan Furuchi and junior Leo Paredes were named honorable mention.
St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) senior Daniel Velichko was named the Bay Counties League - East (BCLE) pitcher of the year. Velichko had an 8-1 record with a 1.88 ERA. SJND seniors Josh Vonnegut, Cameron Murphy, Atticus Gonzalez and Tommy Cooke each made the BCLE First Team. Sophomore Robbie Fintland also made the first team. Junior Noah Klube and seniors Colin Ng and Henry Weichhart made the second team. Senior Matteo George was named honorable mention.

Softball
AHS junior Jasmine Whorley was named WACC Foothill League pitcher of the year. According to MaxPreps, Whorley went 12-2 with a .086 ERA. Whorley made the Foothill League First team along with junior Katy Lambert, senior Ashlie Nakano and sophomore Aaliyah Soderland. AHS seniors Madison Wellnitz and Jenna Kwong, and freshman Leaira Robinson were named to the All-League Second Team. Sarah Freeman and Abbye Haines were named honorable mention.
EHS junior captain Lola Whalen was named co-WACC Shoreline League Player of the Year. Whalen had a .472 batting average and compiled 39 RBIs in just 26 games. Whalen also made the All-League First Team, along with junior pitcher Celeste Hurtubise and sophomores Jazlyn Alcantar and Kiely Wong. Junior Amy Screechfield and freshman Cameron Tran made the Shoreline League Second Team. EHS players Sherrilyn Ferrer and Sophia Tramel were named honorable mention.

Men’s Golf
AHS freshman Kailer Stone was named WACC golfer of the year. He led AHS’ golf team to the WACC golf championship this season. Stone and his teammates Neil Albelda, Will Roizen and Matt Thornton each made the All-League Team.
SJND teammates Landon Crevani and Gaelan Dudley made the BCLE Second Team.

Swimming
Hornet Sydney Thompson made the WACC women’s All-League swim team. AHS players Will Cooper and Ethan Giang were selected to the WACC men’s All-League swim team.

Track-and-Field
EHS senior Aiden Letson was named to the WACC men’s All-League track and field team.
SJND senior Teo Salgues made the BCLE men’s All-League track-and-field team. Sophomore Izabella Jauregui and juniors Luisa Barrantes and Isabella Corral made the BCLE women’s All-League team.

Men’s Volleyball
AHS player Aiden Yee was selected to the WACC men’s volleyball All-League First Team. His teammates Austin Lee, Ray Ulibarri, and Dylan Wondolleck were named to the All-League Second Team.
Encinal players Kadry Gatmaitan, Peter Ha, and Noah Yiu each made the WACC men’s volleyball All-League Second Team. The Jet duo of Lucia Iacona and Ian Tran were named honorable mention.
Senior middle blocker Christian Grunt was named the BCLE men’s volleyball Most Valuable Player. Juniors Parker Johnston and Christian Chiu made the BCLE men’s volleyball All-League First Team, along with Grunt. Sophomore middle blocker Sam Baleinakorodawa was selected Second Team All-League. Pilot Senior Olivia Valdez was named honorable mention.
The All-League teams are voted on by the coaches in the respective leagues.
