Local Basketball Season Tips Off

Encinal High School started its basketball season last week as the Lady Jets lost their opener 54-53 to Castro Valley on May 5. The Trojans won the game on a buzzer beater. Encinal also lost 34-30 to Hayward High on May 7.

“Coach told the team that we need to get out of our own heads because that was what caused the loss,” said junior Kavanti Brooks. “But, also that we are better than how we played on the court. She said that we need to step up as a team and take pride in our school and jersey.”

The Jets men’s team won its season opener 54-28 against San Lorenzo on May 5 before falling 44-41 to Hayward on May 7.

“We had a lot of missed layups and struggled on rebounds,” said junior Davis Oduor. “Our energy should have been better the first half.”

Against Hayward, junior Jacob Baca had a chance to tie the game but his shot rimmed out as time expired.

Both teams play Mt. Eden on May 14.
