Library Takeout, or curbside pick-up, launches Monday, June 15

Starting Monday, June 15, 2020, Alameda Free Library cardholders will be able to make an appointment to pick up items at the Main Library. We know that our community will have questions about how this process is going to work. To help break down the many steps we have taken to protect our patrons and staff, we’ve created this quick guide with information about the program:

  • Library Takeout begins Monday, June 15, 2020, at the Alameda Free Main Library at 1550 Oak Street.
  • Materials must be placed on HOLD before you arrive. You can request materials online or you can call 510-747-7740 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between the hours of 12-5pm.
  • All holds will be available for pickup at the Main Library only. Holds that are normally sent to the Bay Farm Island Library and the West End Library must be picked up at the Main Library.
  • We will call you when your Library Takeout order is ready and arrange an appointment for pickup. Please allow up to 48 hours for your request to be processed. Make sure your contact information is correct so we can reach you easily.
  • You must have an appointment to pick up your holds. When you arrive at the Main Library, call us at 510-747-7740 to let us know you’re here and we’ll meet you at the door.
  • Please be ready to show your library card or a picture ID. You will not have direct contact with staff – your materials will already be checked out and your receipt will be stapled to your bag.
  • Patrons who are coming to pick up materials must wear a face covering and practice appropriate social/physical distancing. Signs will direct patrons to the pickup point.
  • If you are physically unable to walk to the library’s entrance, please make that clear when making your appointment so special arrangements can be made.
  • Book drops are open at all three Alameda Free Library buildings and we no longer charge overdue fines.
  • All returned materials will be quarantined for at least 72 hours before being made available for checkout.
  • Libraries are not open to the public yet. Before we can open we need to install safety equipment, reconfigure our spaces, and create new pathways to get around our libraries. At this time we do not have a scheduled reopen date.
  • Please be patient as library staff works to process the backlog of materials and your Library Takeout requests.

We are prepared and ready to safely offer this new Library Takeout service, as well as provide our community with educational and entertaining virtual programming options. We are deeply committed to your safety and the safety of our staff and neighbors.

These are challenging times and the staff of the Alameda Free Library is ready to accept this challenge. We hope the library can be a way for Alameda residents of all ages to experience a small bit of normality by curling up with a good book from the library.

Alameda Free Main Library is located at 1550 Oak Street. The Main Library is served by AC Transit routes 21 and 51A. Bicycle parking racks are available at the library.
