Library ‘Take Out’ Now Open for Readers

As of Monday, Alameda Free Library cardholders can make appointments to pick up items at the Main Library. Materials must be placed on hold in advance. Request materials online or at (510) 747-7740 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between noon and 5 p.m.

All holds will be available for pickup at the Main Library, 1550 Oak St., only. Holds that are normally sent to the Bay Farm Island Library and the West End Library must be picked up at the Main Library.

Patrons will receive a call when Library Takeout orders are ready to arrange an appointment for pickup. Allow up to 48 hours to process requests. When patrons arrive, they must call 510-747-7740, and staff will meet them at the door.

Library card or a picture ID required. No direct contact with staff required, materials will already be checked out and a receipt will be stapled to the bag. Patrons coming to pick up materials must wear a face covering and practice appropriate social and physical distancing. Signs will direct patrons to the pickup point.

Those who are physically unable to walk to the library’s entrance, need to make that clear when making appointments so special arrangements can be made.

Book drops are open at all three Alameda Free Library buildings and overdue fines are no longer charged. All returned materials will be quarantined for at least 72 hours before being made available for checkout.

Libraries are not open to the public yet. Safety equipment must first be installed, spaces reconfigured and new pathways created There is no scheduled reopen date.

Library staff is working to process the backlog of materials from the period the library was completely closed, and new Library Takeout requests.

“These are challenging times and the staff of the Alameda Free Library is ready to accept this challenge,” stated a library press release. “We hope the library can be a way for Alameda residents of all ages to experience a small bit of normality by curling up with a good book from the library.”

The Main Library is served by AC Transit routes 21 and 51A. Bicycle parking racks are available at the library. For more information on this and other library programs and services, visit www.alamedafree.org or contact the Alameda Free Library circulation department at 747-7740.
