The Alameda High women’s junior varsity soccer team won the New Year’s tournament championship this past weekend at Dublin High.
The Lady Hornets advanced to the championship match by defeating host Dublin, Irvington of Fremont and Granada of Livermore in the preliminary rounds. The Lady Hornets faced Las Lomas of Walnut Creek on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The match was tied at 1 at the end of both regulation and overtime. The Lady Hornets won the championship tiebreaker on extra kicks from the mark 4 to 3.
Hornet keeper Megan Martin blocked two of Las Lomas’ five shots whereas each of the Hornets’ four kicks — taken by Skylar Herrera-Ross, Kelley Desmond, Sarah Beilman, and Amani Webber-Schultz hit the net. Alex Walls would have taken the fifth kick if necessary.
“This victory was very encouraging for our program and shows that we are heading in the right direction in building Alameda High School into a regional powerhouse in women’s soccer,” said Alameda High Head Varsity coach Abu Pigot, congratulating his younger counterparts.
