Lady Hornets Advance to Section Semis

The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s basketball team used its defensive prowess to score a heart-racing 37-33 victory over Casa Grande High of Petaluma in the second round of the North Coast Section (NCS) Div. II women’s basketball playoffs Saturday, Feb. 19.

The Hornets achieved their impressive victory on the road in front of a packed and rowdy Gaucho home crowd.

The Hornets (13-7) took over the game late, outscoring the Gauchos 10-2 in the final quarter. AHS entered the fourth quarter down, 31-27.

The Hornets still trailed late in the fourth quarter when its suffocating defense overwhelmed the Gauchos. AHS used a double-teaming trap defense to force Casa Grande into five turnovers in the fourth quarter alone. The critical moment came with less than two minutes left in the game when the Hornets forced a Gaucho player into a poor pass, which was stolen by AHS sophomore Malani Mastoria who drove the rest of the distance for the basket that gave the Hornets their first lead of the night at 35-33.

The game was still tied at 35-33, with 13 seconds left, when AHS guard Karis Lin stole the ball and was fouled. The sophomore sank two free throws to put AHS up 37-33.

Casa Grande led 20-15 at halftime.

The victory was payback for AHS. The Gauchos defeated the Hornets, 53-49, on Dec. 8, 2021, on the same court.

The Hornets advanced to the NCS Div. II semifinals where they'll face Acalanes High of Lafayette Wednesday, Feb. 23. Acalanes is the one seed in the tournament, while AHS is the fifth seed. Acalanes defeated Washington High of Fremont, 53-24, in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Alameda High men’s team
