Lady Golfers Team up with Men in Joint Play

The Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) held a joint tournament event with the Alameda Senior Men’s Club last Thursday, Aug. 28, on the Earl Fry Course.

The women and men were broken into teams of four — two men, two women. The teammates combined their personal net scores to determine which flight group the team would compete in.

The team of Raye Pereira, Juanita Solano, Ron Trentler and Ray Huntley won the first flight — combined handicap of 83 to 93 — with a net 115. The team’s strong play earned them a sizable margin of victory as the next closest team score was seven strokes behind.

Bernice Herzberg, Shirley Lee, Edmond Lee and Hugh Lee combined to score a net 122 for second place, while the team of Linda Ferrill, Dot Moody, Ralph Bertelsen and Kurt Libby shot a combined net 123. Bobbie Hoepner, Fran Mori, Frank Brunetti and Luis Gomez came together to shoot a net 124 for fourth place.

The second flight — handicap of 97 to 116 — saw a much tighter competition. Naomi Lee, Barbara Mickle, Jose Cerda and George Humphreys shot a combined net 126 to win the flight.

The winning team was just one stroke ahead of the second place teams. The team of Carole Evans, Pat O’Hara, John Belmondo and Al Ferrey and the team of Bev Blatt, Kay Park, Mark Palmer and Brian Peck tied for second place in the flight with net 127s, but Evans and her squad won the tiebreaker. Wilda Moore, Ruby Soo, Richard Cohen and Robert Metcalf combined to shoot a net 128 for fourth place.

Ray Huntley won the closest-to-the-hole competition on the fourth hole by shooting his ball within 10’ 2" of the hole. Huntley also won the competition on the 11th hole when his ball landed 7’ 2" from the hole. Brian Pack won the competition on the seventh hole as his ball stopped 13’ 10" from the pin. Libby got the honor on the 15th hole as his ball stopped within 11’ 1" of the hole.
