Part Two
This past spring, the Haight Renaming Committee invited Alameda Unified School District students to write essays and letters sharing their thoughts about renaming Haight Elementary School. “Should Haight School be renamed? Why or why not?” For the youngest winners, see part one of this story in last week’s edition. All writers are students at Lincoln Middle School unless otherwise noted.

On Saturday, July 13, at 3:39 a.m., the Alameda Fire Department responded to a fire at Woodstock Park, at Cypress and Third Streets near Alameda Point. Arriving crews found the play structure fully engulfed in flames (“Suspicious Fires Doused at Park,” July 18). The fire was extinguished, but not until it destroyed the play structure.

Alamedans are encouraged to submit applications now for two civic engagement academies, one for adults and one for local high school juniors and seniors. Both programs are free to attend and are designed to provide insight to Alameda County’s services and operations through learning and discussing the county’s Vision 2026 core themes: healthy environment; thriving and resilient population; safe and livable communities; and a prosperous and vibrant economy.

The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) recently recognized Alameda alum and Wrocester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) atendee Christine Hovermale for her achievments in academics and athletics.

Hovermale’s team was led by three-time selections Eva Barinelli and Madeline Burke and 2019 NCAA Elite 90 honoree Sarah St. Pierre. The association recognized a total of 10 WPI women’s rowers as National Scholar-Athletes for their work on the lake and in the classroom.

The Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) announced the launch of its annual “Equipped 4 Success” school supply drive earlier this week. The drive supports low-income Alameda students by providing them with new backpacks and quality school supplies. Community members may support the drive through financial donations or by donating new backpacks and school supplies.
