Encinal High School Jets cross country runner Shelby Nelson set a team record at the Lowell Invitational meet in Golden Gate Park last Saturday. She finished fourth in a heat of 171 runners, with a time of 17:55, beating the previous record set in 2009 by 24 seconds. Nelson, a junior, finished 10th overall. The race is the first and largest of the cross country season with more than 80 schools and almost 3,000 athletes participating.

Teammates Michael Chen, Luis Booth, Gabby Cassaro and Marlene Delgado also finished strong, setting personal bests on the 2.93-mile course. Freshmen Aila Owens and Neo Kinet had spectacular debuts, finishing second and third respectively on the Jets’ varsity teams.
