Jets, Hornets Top Respective Leagues

Both Alameda (AHS) and Encinal (EHS) high school baseball teams finished in first place in their respective leagues at the end of the regular season.

AHS clinched the outright regular season title for the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Foothill Division last Thursday, May 10, with a 2-0 victory over Arroyo of San Lorenzo. Senior Bryan Woo took the mound for the Hornets. The future Cal Poly San Luis Obispo athlete struck out eight and allowed just two hits. Ryan Wong drove in both runs for the Hornets. The Hornets finished the league season with a 14-1-1 mark and 22-1-1 overall.

Alameda hosted Castro Valley in the first round of the league tournament Tuesday, May 15, at Lincoln Field.

EHS sits atop the WACC Shoreline Division. The Jets moved to 10-5-1 in the league after a pair of forfeit wins over Tennyson of Hayward. EHS’ last league win in an actual game came in a 9-0 blowout win over San Lorenzo on May 3. The Jets scored four runs in the first and second innings. They scored the ninth run in the third.

EHS senior Osiris Johnson led the way offensively going 3-for-4 from the plate and driving in five runs. Junior Jon Atases pitched a complete-game (seven innings) shutout with five strike outs.

The Jets will now prepare for the division tournament.
