Islanders Train for Regional Swim Meet

Alameda’s Special Olympics athletes, the Alameda Islanders, are currently training at Encinal Swim Center for a regional swim meet, to be held this spring, date and place to be determined.

The swimmers must post qualifying times to enter races in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.

Coach Susan is putting them through their paces and volunteers are in the water with them to assure safety. Assistant coaches are timing their laps. Special Olympics also features race events for non-swimmers, such as walk, kickboard, assisted swim and unassisted swim.

Alameda Islanders are motivated by the Special Olympics motto: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Earlier this year Alameda’s Special Olympics athletes were participating in walking events. The Walking Club meets every Saturday at 9 a.m. in front of the Jean Sweeney Open Space parking lot. The Islanders walk for about an hour and would love for residents join them on walks.
