Islanders Finish Second

The 2010 Under-nine Alameda Islanders Red boys’ soccer team earned second place in NorCal State Cup Premier division four tournament Dec. 4.

The team from Alameda made it to the championship match at Woodward Park in Manteca, but lost to Placer United 10B Gold team 4-3. 

In the final match the Islanders were down 2-0 at halftime. In the second half they battled back behind goals from Dylan Garfinkle and Adam Nguyen to bring the score to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation. 

The Islanders were down 3-2 with 30 seconds left in the overtime period when Sohaib Kaanoune “nut-megged” the keeper to send the match in to penalty kicks. In the round of five penalty kicks, each team scored four goals forcing an elimination round where the Islanders came up short.

The Islanders began the NorCal State Cup elimination round with a 6-2 victory over Sacramento United in the quarterfinal on Nov. 4 at Granite Park in Sacramento. 

They played their semifinal match against Davis Legacy in a torrential downpour on Dec. 1 at Woodward Park. The Islanders overcame the elements and defeated the Legacy 6-4 in the contest. 

The team finished 1-2 for third place in Bracket A in round one of the State Cup Premier division. They beat Livermore Fusion 4-1 on Sept. 23, but lost to Sheriffs Football Club of Ashland 5-1 on Sept. 9 and Mustang Elite of Danville 8-0. Mustang Elite won the division.

The Islanders went 1-1-1 in round two in bracket H in State Cup Premier division. They finished in third place again. They beat the San Mateo County Earthquakes 11-1 on Nov. 3. They lost to the Tahuichi Football Club 4-2 on Nov. 3 and finished in a 2-2 tie with Dublin United on Nov. 4. Dublin United won the Bracket H division.
