Island Swimmers Make Splash at Moraga Meet
Members of the Alameda Gators swim team competed in the Hills Hurricane Swimming event on Feb. 9 and 10 in Moraga.
Sydney Thompson was the most successful Gator at the swim meet. The 12-year-old won the girls’ 11- to 12-year-old 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 33.87. She beat out 53 other competitors to win the race. The 50-yard breaststroke was Thompson’s only win, but she had plenty of other top-10 finishes at the event.
Thompson finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.59. She was one of 96 competitors in the race.
She finished sixth, out of 98 athletes, in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.34. Thompson came in ninth place, out of 65 participants, in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:13.22.
She also finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:42.69) and the 50-yard fly stroke (30.23) competitions.
Kylie Zorn finished seventh in the girls’ 10-and-under 50-yard freestyle with a time of 33.05. The 10-year-old Gator was one of 65 girls to compete in the meet. Zorn best two races came in the 50-yard breaststroke (41.28) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:28.45) where she finished third in both races. Zorn also finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:10.79), ninth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:38.37) and seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:56.59).
Leo Patakas had a good showing at the event. The seven-year-old finished 11th in the boys’ eight-and-under 25-yard freestyle with a time of 20.85. Patakas was the fastest seven- year-old in the race. Twenty-three participants competed in the race.
Kevin Habek finished sixth in the boys’ 13-and-over 100-yard freestyle. Habek, 15, completed the race in a time of 51.77. Habek also finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.58.
More than 30 Alameda Gators competed in the event.
