Island Poets Meet July 3
The Alameda Island Poets monthly poetry reading will feature poetry broadcasters and Benicia poets: Nina Serrano, Thomas Stanton, poet laureate; Johanna Ely, poet laureate emeritus; poet, painter and musician Sam Morse and legendary Beat Poet QR Hand on Wednesday, July 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. The reading will be held at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts, 1601 Paru St. Hosted by Nanette Deetz and Alameda Poet Laureate, Cathy Dana, the event features light refreshments followed by an open mic. Admission is by donation.
The unusual poetry bunch gathering this month broadcasts poems together on the local Vallejo community radio station, OZCAT, twice monthly. They hang out afterward at a Vallejo donut shop to exchange their views of poetry and the world. Their combined poetic works make for a dynamic and varied poetry performance reflecting their diverse yet compatible personalities.
Serrano, 84, produces community radio programs for KPFA and OZCAT, focused on literature and LatinX cultural affairs. Her publications include: a trilogy of poetry books, a novel, a play, as well a translation of The Economic Plan for the Benefit of the People.
