Island May Host Pro Soccer

Professional soccer clubs, the Oakland Roots and the Oakland Soul, a new women’s soccer team set to debut in 2023, have named two locations as potential sites for their interim soccer stadium. The two proposed sites are near Oakland Coliseum and the former Alameda Naval Base at Alameda Point.

“We are very excited to have found two sites that meet our needs,” said Oakland Roots and Soul President Lindsay Barenz in a statement on the Oakland Roots’ website. “Both locations have challenges, but nothing that we can’t work through. The Coliseum will require work to ensure an interim stadium plan and the future of the Coliseum site is coordinated with several parties involved, and the former Naval Base at Alameda Point presents some transportation and parking issues. We hope that every Roots and Soul fan will take our new survey so that we can better understand the needs for our interim stadium moving forward.”

The clubs are asking residents of both Alameda and Oakland to take part in a survey to receive public feedback on which location will better serve its fans. To take part in the survey, visit https://surveys.customintercept.com/CSL/2022/Oakland_Stadium.

The Oakland Roots, Oakland Soul, and Project 51O will use the stadium for about 10 years while the club finds a permanent home in Oakland. Oakland Roots will continue to play at Laney College until the interim stadium is complete.

Regardless of site, the new stadium would offer:
• Seats closer to the field with prime sightlines and right-sized capacity to create an exciting, intimate match day experience;
• A variety of unique general and premium and reserved seat offerings and experiences with ample restrooms and concession points of sale;
• Enhanced stadium video board, sound system and connectivity;
• Spaces for local food trucks and pre-game block parties and more.

The Oakland Roots play in the United Soccer League (USL). The USL is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer) as a Division II league since 2017, placing it under Major League Soccer (Division I) in the hierarchy. They currently play at Laney College in Oakland. For the 2022 season, the Roots used the former Oakland Raiders training facility on Harbor Bay Parkway as its training facility.
