Come see the West Coast Dance Theater’s 41st annual June show “Dance to the Music,” on Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, at 7 p.m. both days.
Marnell Xavier, artistic director of the West Coast Dance Theater, has put together a show full of amazing choreography and snappy tunes. The West Coast Performers International Touring Company is made up of teens and young adults who sing and dance worldwide.
Perfect weather greeted those who visited Robert Crown Memorial State Beach to see plots of sand evolve into showpieces at the annual Alameda Sand Castle and Sand Sculpture Contest Saturday, June 7. In its 48th year, the free event’s sponsors were the Alameda Parks and Recreation Department (ARPD), East Bay Regional Park District, Bayview Women’s Club and Alameda Youth Committee.
Photographer Chris Adamson noticed that when he tilted the photograph he had taken on its axis, it had the configuration of a yin-yang symbol. The cool turquoise and blues on the wall of the home in the picture formed one curve, and the fence, the other. After photographing this discovery, he continued roaming the streets, eyes peeled for photo opportunities to make exhibit-worthy pieces.
In honor of Araw ng Kalayaan, Philippine Independence Day, Rhythmix Island Arts presents an array of artists celebrating the cultural traditions of the Philippine islands on the island of Alameda.
Featuring the American Center of Philippine Arts, Parangal Dance Company, Kulintronica and Kristian Kabuay, the event takes place this Saturday, June 7, at 7 p.m. at Rhythmix Cultural Works, 2513 Blanding Ave. Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door, and $15 for students/seniors.
Alameda artist Jon Kerpel is exhibiting his assemblages at the Alameda Free Library through Saturday, June 28, on the second floor of the Main Library, 1550 Oak St. This is the first in a series of shows of Kerpel’s artworks entitled The Good Earth Project. Kerpel is a utopian environmentalist at heart, believing that all the earth’s creatures play an important role in the web of life.
