Inaugural Island-Wide Book Club Selection Announced
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead has been chosen as the City of Alameda’s initial selection for the launch of ReadAlameda, an annual Island-wide book club. Alameda residents voted and choose The Underground Railroad to be the inaugural title. The book was published in 2016 and received broad praise, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction. Whitehead’s book is also a New York Times Bestseller and an Oprah’s Book Club selection.
To participate, read what everyone else is reading. Between now and the end of the year, pick up a copy of The Underground Railroad at the Alameda Free Library or Books Inc., download a digital copy or purchase the book online.
Readers can also select The Underground Railroad for any pre-established book club. Alameda businesspeople can encourage their employees to read the book.
Then, all readers are invited to attend the culmination event in January (date and location to be announced).
“Alameda comes together as a community in so many ways; we thought it would be fun if everyone was on the same page — literally! Pick up a copy of The Underground Railroad and read along with the Island,” stated City Manager Jill Keimach.
