Hundreds Ride for Parks
The rain clouds parted just in time for the first-ever Ride for the Parks event held last Saturday. More than 500 cyclists of all ages and skill levels gathered at the start and end point, Washington Park (above), to raise money for the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD). Alameda Bicycle, Team Alameda and the Alameda Rotary Club helped staff the event along with ARPD, other sponsors and volunteers. Riders were encouraged to take either an 8-mile or 22-mile journey along the shorelines of Alameda and Bay Farm Island.
I can confirm, after riding the 22-mile course, that the event was very well organized, safe and inspiring to those who may have discovered just how easy it is to get around Alameda on a bicycle.
Participants were treated to an after party featuring the Sun Kings band and food trucks. Gene Oh, owner of Alameda Bicycle, created the event to support Alameda’s parks and intends to hold the fundraiser annually.
