Hornet Senior Takes First Place at Meet

 

Alameda High (AHS) senior Ramir Smith won the men’s 100-meter race at the West Alameda County Conference league championship Saturday, May 12, at Burrell Fields in San Leandro.
Smith, who has been stellar in 100-meter events all spring, finished the race in 11.11. His teammate junior Kaleb Vance finished fourth out of 54 players who competed in the meet. He finished with a time of 11.36. Hornet junior Michael Jordan finished eighth with a time of 11.65. Encinal High (EHS) junior Aloyouis Bruce was the first Jet to complete the race in 15th place overall with a time of 11.95.

Smith also won the men’s 200-meter race. He crossed the finish line in 22.35. He just beat out the second-place finisher Femi Ajose of San Leandro High who finished the meet with a time of 22.38. Vance finished tied for ninth with a time of 23.38. Bruce finished 17th with a time of 24.14. Fifty-one runners competed in the meet.

AHS junior Lauren Lum and EHS junior Shelby Nelson battled for supremacy in the women’s 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races. Lum and Nelson finished first and second in both races, respectively. Lum won the 1,600-meter meet with a time of 5:08.43. Nelson finished second with a time of 5:10.89. Thirty-one runners competed in the race. AHS junior Katherine Gee finished ninth with a time of 5:41.97, while AHS freshman Zelinda Strell finished in 18th place with a time of 6:02.84.

Lum blew away the field in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 11:19.48. Nelson finished second, but with a time of 11:39.58, more than 20 second behind Lum. Seventeen athletes participated in this event.

Katherine Gee finished in second place in the women’s 800-meter race. She finished with a time of 2:27.47. EHS sophomore Gabby Cassaro finished sixth with a time of 2:33.89. 

AHS senior Matthew Yep finished third in the men’s 1,600-meter race. He finished with a time of 4:33.38. His teammate senior Ethan West finished fifth with a time of 4:37.06. Fifty-four athletes competed in the men’s 1,600. Nineteen athletes competed in the race.

Yep and West also finished in the top 10 in the men’s 3,200-meter race. Yep finished fourth with a time of 10:02.39. West finished in seventh place with a time of 10:13.87. Their teammates Patrick Nguyen, 12th place with a time of 10:31.62, and senior Devin Rowe, 15th place with a time of 10:57.76, also had top-15 finishes. Thirty-one athletes competed in the race.
