Hornet Golf Finishes in Seventh

The Alameda High (AHS) women’s golf team finished seventh at the North Coast Section (NCS) Div. I golf tournament Oct. 29 at Tilden Park Golf Course in Berkeley.

The Hornets finished with a team score of 432. The Hornets did not qualify for the NorCal regional women’s golf tournament. Only the top three teams in the section tournament advance to the regional tournament.

Dougherty Valley High of San Ramon won the tournament Monday afternoon. The team posted a team score of 377. Carondelet High of Concord finished in second with a score of 383. Foothill High of Pleasanton rounded out the top three with a score of 384.

AHS was led by Laurie Tan. The senior shot a 75 to pace the Hornets in the tournament. Tan missed the cutoff to compete in the regional tournament as an individual by just one stroke. The top four individual performers on teams that do not qualify for the NorCal tournament advance as an individual.

Charlotte Ryoo from Amador Valley High in Pleasanton and Mika Jin of Irvington High tied for first place with a 72 — Melinda Yuan from Dougherty Valley also shot a 72 in the tournament. Ashley Pan from Campolindo High in Moraga, Alex Christeson from Granada High in Livermore and Jackie Caliente from Deer Valley High in Antioch each shot a 74. Pan and Christeson won the tiebreaker to qualify for the NorCal tournament.

Tan’s teammate Sidney Heng, a junior, was second on the team with an 81. Senior Alexis Esguerra shot an 83. Freshman Ashley Heng shot an 84. Junior Alexis Quan posted a 109 to round out the team’s top five.

A total of 18 teams competed in the event. One team withdrew from the tournament. The Hornets finished sixth in last year’s NCS tournament.
