High School Sports Results: Oct. 16 to 23
Football:
• Alameda High School (AHS) lost to Newark Memorial, 26-19 (Oct. 21)
• Encinal High School (EHS) lost to San Leandro High, 43-8 (Oct. 21)
After seven straight games on the road, the Jets were happy to finally play in front of a home crowd on October 21. However, the joyous atmosphere was short-lived as San Leandro (2-6) defeated Encinal (1-7) 43-8 at Willie Stargell Field.
The Pirates were only leading 14-0 in the second quarter when WACC All-League wide receiver Marques Singleton returned a kickoff 71 yards to make it 14-8. It was the first return touchdown of the season for Singleton, who last year broke the school record for most special teams touchdowns in a season.
“It’s a tough loss,” said quarterback Tristan Berena. “But we put points on the board and we did not argue with each other.”
San Leandro took a 30-8 lead into the half.
