Heed the Warning

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller has given us a dire warning: Our democratic election system has been, and continues to be, hacked and compromised by the Russian  police and intelligence agency, KGB. We face a national political crisis above and beyond the party-line food fight in Washington, D.C.

From the Mueller Report
There were two KGB military units assigned to United States political interference: KGB Military Unit 26165 and KGB Military Unit 74455. The first is a cyber unit dedicated to targeting military, political, governmental and non-governmental organizations outside of Russia, including the U.S. Their specialties are developing malware and large-scale spear phishing.

Military Unit No. 26165 had primary responsibility for the 2016 hacking of the Democratic campaign computers, as well as individuals working for the Trump Campaign. The second unit had more to do with issuing propaganda on social media. Together they undermined the 2016 election and continue to undermine the very foundation of this country.

To do this work anonymously, the KGB was careful to use “bitcoin” which allowed the purchase of the computer infrastructure used in the hacking operations.

The KGB malware was planted on Democratic Congressional Campaign and Democratic National committees’ computer networks, including “X-Agent,” which allowed the KGB to see key strokes, take screenshots and gather data. The malware, “X-Tunnel,” allowed the KGB to create an encrypted connection between the DNC and the KGB computers. The KGB could now do large-scale data transfers — like the infamous DNC email leaks.

The documents stolen by KGB officers included significant data regarding the 2016 U.S. presidential election such as internal strategy documents, fundraising data, opposition research and emails from the work inboxes of the whole DNC staff.

The KGB’s operation extended well beyond stealing documents. It included releasing those stolen documents and wreaking havoc in an already contentious campaign. To do this anonymously, the KGB created two fictitious online personas for use on Facebook and Twitter — DCLeaks and Guccifer 2.0 — both for releasing stolen documents. They also used WikiLeaks.

In addition to targeting the democratic campaign, KGB officers also targeted state and federal boards of elections to include: secretaries of state and county governments as well as individuals who worked for them. For example, in the summer of 2016, the KGB gained access to the Illinois State Board of Elections and hacked a database containing information on millions of registered Illinois voters. In another example, KGB “spear phishing” in Florida resulted in a “trojan” being implanted in computers of public election officials which provided full access.

In Conclusion
Even more concerning, the KGB targeted private tech firms responsible for manufacturing and administering election-related software and hardware. After Mueller’s testimony, the House of Representatives put through emergency legislation to secure our election system before 2020. The effort was blocked by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Newsweek has reported McConnell — who received $200 million dollars from Russian Oligarch Deripaska shortly after he (McConnell) allowed the repeal of Russian sanctions in January 2019 — sanctions geared toward Deripaska’s business.

We’re up to our necks by my estimates. I recommend readers contact Secretary of State Alex Padilla at (916) 653-6814 to lodge concerns. Please also reach out to Alameda County Registrar of Voters Tim DuPuis at (510) 267-8683. Last time I spoke to him he stated Alameda County’s system was secure. I’d like that in writing, please.
